The 103-Year-Old Pocket Hercules

The 103-Year-Old Pocket Hercules

They called him the Pocket Hercules. As a teenager, Manohar Aich could bend steel bars with his bare hands as well as with his teeth. At 39, after he had taken up bodybuilding, he won the Mr. Universe competition in 1952. And he managed to do all this despite being only 4 feet 11 inches, thus his nickname. Mr. Aich took up circus performing in the 1960s, traveling around his home country of India with his family. His best-loved act was known as muscle dancing, in which he rippled his body to music. "He gave performances until he was 87, showing his muscles," said Madhukar Talwalker, 83, a bodybuilder. "He was wrinkled and bald, but he always had an eight-pack, even in his old age."

From Aich's obituary in The New York Times, 2016. He lived to be 103 years old.
