The photographer Jake Michaels was inspired by Cindy Sherman’s “Untitled Film Stills” (1977-80) and sought to evoke something similar in modern-day Los Angeles.

“People spend a lot of time in their cars in Los Angeles,” he said. “I chose downtown because it’s one of the only places that brings everybody together.” That was the case of the woman photographed above. Mr. Michaels noticed her wearing all red from a couple of blocks away and ran to take her picture. “I think that engaging with people on the street is just as important as the photograph itself,” he said. He was also drawn to the color of her outfit. “Thematically, I was really attracted to the color red in this series.”
